The Conflict of Comparison

“The grass is greener where you water it.”

This saying is a wonderful one for me. So often have I placed myself on the edge of a fence, longingly admiring the surrounding gardens and others’ dreams fulfilled. Have you? It can seem like such a lovely place.

And yet, such yearning can shift into a cycle of self-doubt. A spiral of “What Ifs” and “How Do Theys.” Causing, at times, a loosened grip of my hands as I stagger to stay above the perimeter and compare.

Comparison knocks us down. Setting a pointed focus on it proves unsustainable, and so then I stumble back into the terrain of my own inner landscape.

Though flustered at first, slowly I begin to realize the seeds I have planted are in fact growing just fine – be it they do so on their own timeline. Seasons come and go. Spin the grasses of your dreams between your fingers and feel their true nature. Their wild, persistent, fluctuating nature. Blooming doesn’t happen all year, but can you trust that it happens?
